The Modules

students study together

The course is made up of 20 modules of instruction, each taking about four weeks to complete.

Each module includes readings and written and practical assignments, as the distance-learning component. Equally important, students come to the school for hands-on tutorials either once a month or once a week, depending on the option they choose.

In the first year of 10 modules, the focus is on technique and on the basics of anatomy and physiology as they are applied in massage therapy. The mid-term exam at the end of the first year tests both academic achievement and practical skills.

The second year also has 10 modules. Modules 11-20 focus on assessing and treating dysfunction and injury, understanding contraindications and treatment adaptations and the value of massage in alleviating symptoms and promoting the body's own healing.

Each module includes a test of achievement on the previous module and on skills and knowledge expected at that point in the course. These tests are administered monthly. The tests are marked during the tutorial, to ensure that students know how they are progressing, and to identify areas where the class, or an individual student, needs more guidance. Every effort will be made to ensure that students do not fall behind, but students who are unwilling or unable to complete the reading and assignments may be asked to leave the program.

Graduating students will be tracked to assess their employment success and how well the course prepared them for their professional responsibilities. These comments, and those of students still enrolled in the program, will shape the course. All materials will be reviewed annually and revised as needed.
