Curriculum: Techniques & Treatment

At successful completion of the two-year program, students will:

Basic Massage Strokes

  • Perform massage strokes effectively.
  • Know the differences among various massage strokes based on their physiological effects.
  • Understand integration of various massage strokes with non-ballistic joint mobilizations to achieve specific physiological effects.
  • Understand the effects of relaxation vs. therapeutic remedial massage techniques.

Pathology

  • Understand the primary distinguishing characteristics of the different tissue types and the possible effects massage may have on healthy and unhealthy tissues.
  • Know the limitations and contraindications of massage therapy on the inflammatory response and the repair process in soft tissue dysfunction.
  • Understand the effects, limitations and contraindications of massage therapy on clients taking commonly prescribed medications for systemic conditions.
  • Understand pain mechanisms.

Systems

  • Understand the possible effects of massage therapy on acute and chronic pain perception, both on a physical and psychological level.
  • Know the effects of massage therapy on the factors leading to peripheral nerve entrapment.
  • Understand the role of massage therapy on the functioning of the endocrine system.
  • Understand the effects of massage therapy on local hemodynamics.
  • Understand the limitations and effects of massage therapy on respiratory function.
  • Know the consequences of massage therapy in the presence of renal dysfunction.
  • Understand the limitations of massage therapy during pregnancy.
  • Understand the limitations of massage therapy on articulations and articular structures as well as on the muscular, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, digestive, urinary, and adult male and female reproductive systems.
  • Understand the effects of muscle tension on the skeletal system and the role of massage in restoring alignment.

Treatment

  • Know how to develop a treatment plan based on a functional hypothesis about soft tissue dysfunction, built on analytical deductions from all the collected data.
  • Know appropriate massage therapy techniques for the treatment of soft tissue dysfunctions.
  • Understand the principles and application of hydrotherapy.
  • Understand local hydrotherapy applications.
  • Understand local applications of heat and cold.
