Pathology

  • Recognize and identify the signs and symptoms of selected pathologies of the following systems: skeletal, articular, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive.
  • Know primary and secondary causes of the disease process. Understand the inflammatory response and its chronological progression.
  • Know the role of the immune system in inflammation and repair, and the consequences of impaired and excessive inflammatory response on tissues.

Assessment

  • Collect and interpret relevant data in a pre-treatment interview.
  • Know proper sequential orthopedic testing techniques.
  • Formulate a plausible functional hypothesis regarding soft tissue dysfunction, based on analytical deductions from all the collected data.

Treatment Planning

  • Know the limitations and contraindications of massage therapy on the inflammatory response and the repair process in soft tissue dysfunction.
  • Understand the effects, limitations and contraindications of massage therapy on clients taking commonly prescribed medications for systemic conditions.
  • Understand pain mechanisms. Understand the possible effects of massage therapy on acute and chronic pain perception, both on a physical and psychological level.
  • Understand the role of massage therapy on the functioning of the endocrine system.
  • Understand the effects of massage therapy on local hemodynamics.
  • Understand the limitations and effects of massage therapy on respiratory function.
  • Know the consequences of massage therapy in the presence of renal dysfunction.
  • Understand the limitations of massage therapy during pregnancy.
  • Understand the limitations of massage therapy on articulations and articular structures as well as on the muscular, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, digestive, urinary, and adult male and female reproductive systems.
  • Understand the effects of muscle tension on the skeletal system and the role of massage in restoring alignment.
  • Know how to develop a treatment plan based on a functional hypothesis about soft tissue dysfunction, built on analytical deductions from all the collected data.
  • Understand the principles and procedures for documentation of treatment data.

Treatment

  • Know appropriate massage therapy techniques for the treatment of soft tissue dysfunctions.
  • Be proficient in the principles and application of hydrotherapy.
  • Be able to encourage clients to make and maintain needed changes to lifestyle or environment.
  • Formulate realistic therapeutic exercise management plans (including patient self-care) and know strengthening or stretching regimens for specific musculoskeletal dysfunctions.
