The Program

students relax in the common area

The instructors are great and the materials are comprehensive, clearly presented, and just what you need to be a success in this growing field.

Our two-year professional program prepares students for the registration exams of the Massage Therapy Association of Alberta (MTAA), and the Massage Therapist Association of Saskatchewan (MTAS). Our grads have found work in most other provinces and territories, as well as the US. Each jurisdiction has its own requirements, but our 2200-hour program is on par with the best programs across Canada.

The program is made up of 20 modules of instruction, each taking about four weeks to complete, including both classroom time (tutorials) and independent study. Students come to the school for hands-on tutorials either once a month or once a week, depending on the option they choose. Between classes, students put in 20-25 hours of independent study each week, including both academic and practical assignments and projects.

In the first year, the focus is on the basics of anatomy and physiology as they are applied in massage therapy, and on wellness massage techniques, with an emphasis on safety and effectiveness. In general, both academic and practical work focuses on the healthy body during first year.

In the second year, students continue to develop as therapists, focusing on assessing and treating dysfunction and injury, understanding contraindications and treatment adaptations and the value of massage in alleviating symptoms and promoting the body's own healing. More specific and specialized techniques are taught, and students prepare for a smooth transition to a successful practice by completing a 200-hour practicum for on-the-job experience.
